"Fragile but whole. Its name hints at a break but before the fissures show, its first two syllable conjure Orpheus, a poet who could charm even stones."
[Serge Lutens]
L'Orpheline ('the orphan' - perfumer: Chris Sheldrake) indeed hints at perfume split in two. It opens with a fresh mint, herby almost lavendar green fougere derived from a blast of aldehydes and coumarin, but this is quickly followed by a warm musky churchy incense cloud of woody cedar, patchouli and ambergris. The juxtaposition of these two contrasting notes - fresh and warm - perhaps continues a theme started earlier by Serge Lutens in his Serge L'eau offerings of mint and musk, but has evolved and become fuller in concept.
As always with Serge and Chris, there is also then the twist - a hint of flint, metallic like a little jolt of electricty running through the woods. Like a mint tea on his Moroccan terrace, after recent floral explorations, Serge has returned to North African themes - a big warm woody scent with hints of fresh greenery.
