Cuir ('leather') has a special place in perfumery, an industry that grew around the tanning process of the middle ages where perfumed oils were used on leather goods (predominantly gloves) to hide some of the more unpleasant odours (predominantly urine) then associated with the trade. More recently, the use of Birch Tar during the tanning process added phenols to the smell of leather and created a smell that is often now associated with cleanliness (Lifebuoy soap for instance, added phenolic acid to create its unique 'clean' smell).
But leather (here, again, Birch Tar), especially combined with spices and woods, has a particular masculine odour and once again, Piver have created a modern masterpiece which doesn't feel the need to try too hard.
